James Seville shows that he is a force to be reckoned with the release of his jaw-dropping “Surreal (feat. Rockie Fresh & Aurelien Barnes) [Remix].” Seville recruits Maybach Music’s Rockie Fresh, the trumpeter from a local brass band known as “New Breed Brass Band,” Aurelien Barnes, and producer Blake Edwards Jr.
Blake Edwards Jr deserves a standing ovation for the production of this remix. There are various intricate stages to this song that take the listener on a journey through different sounds and experiences. The beginning palm muted guitar chords; along with Barnes’ euphoric trumpet opens the song, introducing the great Rockie Fresh. The thumping, walking bass line compliments Rockie’s easy-going, head-bobbing verse. The beat spirals down into a smooth assortment of kicks, hats, snares, and Barnes’ distant trumpet breezing in the background. With a quick inhale, the beat picks up as Seville delivers the groovy chorus. Seville carries the song into his verse, where his suave voice spits over an animated synth. With another quick inhale, the beat changes to a swing style sound, accenting Barnes’s exuberant trumpet playing, and closing out the song with Seville asking “Can you feel me?”
I feel you James Seville. This song embodies the word surreal in every meaning. Seville speaks in his lyrics of how surreal things are in his life. The beat, with all of its unique and unusual components along with the lyrics evoke a truly surreal feeling, and that is what makes for good music. Seville and company put together a fantastic remix that is worth the listen. Be on the lookout for more to come from up and coming New Orleans native James Seville.
